Home Accessibility Features Are Great Preventive Measures

May 5, 2012 Jeff APHM Los Angeles Aging House Specialist

Home accessibility features should be a part of each home where handicap or disable people reside. Each year thousands of people are admitted into the hospital and hundreds of elderly individuals are forced to reside in nursing homes. The majority of these individuals suffer from a fractured hip or a broken bone, caused by a slip and fall accident in the bathroom. Many aging adults live alone and for them it can be a struggle. To help make their life easier and more convenient the installation of a newly updated bathroom is the ultimate solution.

Handicap or disability accessibility features include a wheelchair ramp, a support rails in the bathroom, grab bars throughout the house, adjustable counter tops, and home maintenance intervention. The home should be a safe and loving environment. It is the one place where every individual should feel safe and secure.

Each room in the home should be renovated and updated with home accessible features to meet the need of the handicap or disabled individual. Each state has some type of home modification program that will absorb most of the expense of renovating. The elderly and aging adults can live alone providing their home is modified to include safety and accessible features for easier living.
